Job Description

Oberlin College and Conservatory is seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual for the position of Director of Intercultural Engagement. This full-time, 12-month Administrative and Professional Staff (A&PS) role reports to the Assistant Dean for Intercultural Engagement and Director Multicultural Resource Commons (MRC) The Director will spearhead initiatives aimed at fostering student development and implementing programs that support historically marginalized identities and recognized cultural heritage organizations. Collaboration with faculty, staff, and students will be essential to create diverse educational opportunities that enhance inclusion on campus.
The Center for Intercultural Engagement (CIE) is comprised of the Multicultural Resource Commons, Gender and Attraction Initiatives (GAI), Office of Religious and Spirituality (ORSL), International Student Scholar Services (ISSS), and Office of Disability and Access (ODA). Together, the CIE focuses on the intersectionality of student identities and works to build a supportive and inclusive community.

The Director will take a leadership role in addressing topical issues by collaborating with CIE, Student Affairs and academic departments. They will identify areas of concern related to justice, equity, diversity, race, and ethnicity, establishing programs and policies that respond to these needs. Additionally, the Director will also work closely with other CIE offices to address the complexities of intersecting identities, including LGBTQ+, gender, disability, religion, and international issues.
In this role, the Director will advocate for the communities served by the MRC and oversee high-level event planning, including technical support. They will provide guidance to affiliated student groups, manage departmental finances, conduct assessments, and supervise the development, marketing, and delivery of educational programs and advocacy initiatives for students, faculty, and staff.

Essential Job Functions:

Manage and coordinate support services for Undocumented students and Black & Latinx (BLx) male-identifying students (40%)

Undocumented Student Program:

● Convene the Oberlin UndocuAlly Faculty and Staff Support Group to assist in ensuring that the needs of undocumented students and faculty and staff are being elevated and addressed as needed.

● Cultivate an inclusive environment by validating the assets undocumented students bring with them to campus.

● Connect undocumented students to resources on (and off) campus that support and serve this community.

● Work as a liaison between Obies for Undocumented Inclusion (OUI) student organization and other support systems on campus.

● Provide programming, such as Undocu-Ally training, to support the needs of undocumented students and their allies.

BLx male support:

● Serve as staff advisor for BLx Student Organizations

● Develop programming for BLx males that applies knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

● Cultivate a sense of physical and psychological safety, both on campus and in the surrounding community.

● Help further connections with other BLx males, faculty and staff on campus

● In collaboration with AARC, AAST and CSS staff, provide intentional academic advising to first-year, BLx males.

● Develop an Advisory Committee consisting of faculty and staff to assist BLx males with resource connections, support, ideas and accountability.

Supervisory Responsibilities (30%)

· Provide mentorship and support to Program Coordinator(s) within the Center for Intercultural Engagement in the development, implementation, and assessment of intercultural programming and student advising initiatives.

Support for Student Organizations (20%)

● Serve as advisor for culturally based athletic groups such as Asian Student Athlete Group (ASAG), Black Student Athlete Group (BSAG).

● Assist the Assistant Dean for Intercultural Engagement and Director of Intercultural Engagement for Gender, Sexuality and Attraction Initiatives in the advisement of culturally supportive student organizations.

Additional Responsibilities/Community Involvement: (10%)

● Provide academic advisement for a small caseload of students.

● Development and implementation of trainings relevant to intercultural engagement support mechanisms.

● Board Member – Ruby N. Jones Community Scholarship Fund (Scholarship and Interview Committee Coordinator).

● Partner with CSS on programming for first-generation and low-income students as requested.


Required Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 7+ years of relevant experience.
● Strong background in advising and mentoring.
● Ability to be flexible in their scheduling understanding that there are times when this work is completed outside of traditional work hours.
● Experience in developing relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, international origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and/or other aspects of human diversity.
● Written and interpersonal communication with the ability to communicate effectively with all components of the College and external constituents.
● Prior experience in creating and implementing programming for historically underrepresented students.
